The Levels of Business Software

Accounting Software: Commonly referred to as "Bean Counting" is also sometimes referred to as the "back office functions" of GL, AR, AP, Payroll, Fixed Assets.

Business Management Software: This level includes accounting software but adds additional processes and functions to encompass order processing, inventory control, point of sale, job costing, project costing, purchasing, service order dispatch, service contracts, rental processing and similar functions that is usually related to more specific methods of operation and processes that may be peculiar to specific industries or market segments. This almost always includes the ability to do sales order processing, sales analysis, vendor perfomance analysis and sometimes employee and quality tracking capabilities.

Enterprise Business Management Software: This level takes Business Management to the next level by encompassing more interaction between additional company sites, customers and vendors as trading partners, and additional processing of transactions to a greater degree of automation and record keeping detail. For manufacturers, this will frequently include capacity planning, scheduling, shop floor control, material requirements planning and other functions related to the operation of the manufacturing facility. Human resources and their management may be addressed at this level.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software: In addition to the above mentioned functions, this level provides for further integration of capabilities such as finance, forecasting, and local and global distribution, quality control, and powerful reporting and monitoring tools. The concept of this totally integrated enterprise is called ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).

The largest companies featuring ERP systems are sometimes referred to as the J-BOPS. These are respectively J D Edwards, BAAN, Oracle, Peoplesoft, and SAP. These typically cost several million dollars and may take years to implement. In addition to these, there are as many as 50 other systems that may be considered as an ERP solution always, and another 100 or so systems that will be ERP level solutions under certain circumstances and for certain companies.
